Lunch Angel Procedures

Shift:  10:50-noon

Grades:
5th, 6th and 7th from 10:55 until 11:25
2nd, 3rd and 4th from 11:25 until 11:55

VOLUNTEER PREPARATION AND PLACEMENT
  1. Each volunteer will need an apron, bathroom pass lanyards and some extra napkins, forks and spoons.
  2. At 10:55 the children will be lined up in the hallway waiting for the okay to enter the cafeteria; the lead angel should check with the cafeteria staff to see if they are ready and turn off the lights so the students know to enter quietly.
  3. lead angel proceeds to the door to let them in;
  4. lead angel stays at the door and makes sure the children are ENTERING QUIETLY and not running; this volunteer should be given any notes regarding lunch dismissals and/or students assigned to silent lunch.
  5. Second angel should make sure the milk cooler lids are opened if not already and be stationed by the stage as students come in
  6. third by Ms. Luchini
(second period lunch does not line up and wait; they enter the cafeteria at 11:25).

NOISE LEVEL
(this section will be updated as soon as the decibel meter is in place)

Lights are to remain out until the children are through the lunch line; if at any point the quiet talks rises to a level that prohibits Ms. Luchini from hearing the children in line, one of the volunteers should ring the bell at Ms. Luchini’s station and make the announcement that the cafeteria will now remain SILENT until the lights come back on.

Once the line is through, a volunteer or Mr. Vernon may turn on the lights and the students may now talk.

Should the need arise for a warning, all 3 volunteers should raise their hand in the air until there is silence (the students will also raise their hands in response); the teachers are using this same sign and the students are all aware of what it means:
  • 1st warning: if the noise levels rises to an unacceptable level, there should be a warning that the lights will go out unless they quiet down.
  • 2nd warning: If the noise level persists or again rises to an unacceptable level, the lights go out and they will have only quiet talk until the end of the period.
  • 3rd warning: If the noise level once again rises, the entire cafeteria will have SILENT lunch until the end of the period.

(If the extreme noise level can be narrowed down to one particular table/area, then that table/area should be warned accordingly).

BATHROOM PASSES/LEAVING THE CAFETERIA
Bathroom passes are given out upon request to be returned when the student returns (however, students are not to be dismissed in groups to the bathroom).

PERMISSIBLE REASONS TO LEAVE THE CAFETERIA:

  1. For lunch money or packed lunch - this should be a rare occurrence; if this happens repeatedly, the teacher should be notified
  2. With a written note from a teacher - from time to time, some students may be making up tests or working with a teacher during the remainder of their lunch period; in these cases, the teacher will have given the student(s) a written note to turn in to the volunteer.
  3. To see the nurse - if a student needs to see the nurse, a volunteer should write a brief note with the student’s name, time they are being sent up and the volunteer’s signature; the student should be escorted up by a volunteer if they need help walking up the stairs, are bleeding or otherwise unsteady.
  4. For a drink of water from the water fountain.

Any other requests such as retrieving forgotten books, coats, putting back lunch boxes, etc. must be put to teacher by the student at the end of the period.

Second Semester 7th grade: During the latter part of the school year, some 7th graders may earn the privilege of eating outside the cafeteria on the porch.  The appropriate teachers will notify Page Hyler when this begins and she in turn will let the volunteers know.

ASSISTANCE DURING LUNCH
  • Passing out extra utensils/napkins
  • Help in opening items
  • Bringing salt/pepper/ condiments as needed

Students are permitted to go back through for additional lunch items, desserts, drinks, etc. as long as the doors are still open; those side doors close at approximately 11:15 for first period and 11:45 for second period; Ms. Luchini will close the doors or a volunteer can check with her and then proceed to close them.

No condiments are to be at the student tables during lunch, although a volunteer may bring condiments to the students to be used and returned to the lunch line.

TEACHER NOTIFICATION
If at any point a volunteer notices repeated arguing between students, bullying, foul language, food fights or encounters disrespect, they are to handle the situation in so far as they are comfortable and/or notify the student’s teacher or Principal Thompson after lunch either by note or directly.  Mr. Vernon is also there to help should such a situation arise.

CLEAN UP AND DISMISSAL FROM CAFETERIA
First Period
At approximately 11:20, the lights should go out to signal the end of lunch.  Students will clear their trays and trash.  Assigned table wipers/sweepers should be called out by volunteers to begin their jobs.  7th grade helpers sweep and the 5th and 6th grade helpers wipe tables during first period lunch.

The rest of the students line up quietly against the wall until their teachers come to dismiss them.

Second Period
At approximately 11:50, the lights should go out to signal the end of lunch
Assigned table wipers/sweepers should be called out by volunteers and begin their jobs

The rest of the students line up quietly against the wall.  When they are silent, 3rd and 4th grades may be dismissed back to their classrooms by a volunteer or Mr. Vernon.  2nd grade is to be dismissed by a volunteer or Mr. Vernon into the hallway where they are to stand/sit quietly until their teachers come to collect them.

The table wipers and cleaners are not dismissed until either a volunteer or Mr. Vernon has checked their work.  They can then be dismissed.

Any large spills or messes that occur during lunch should be cleaned up by the responsible student, aided by the volunteers or staff as needed.  Rolls of brown paper towels are located throughout the cafeteria and should be used for larger spills as opposed to napkins.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

(These are posted on the bulletin board in the cafeteria as well).
  • Fire: An alarm will sound throughout the school including the fire alarm mounted to the cafeteria wall by the clock.  Everyone exits the cafeteria via the back doors leading outside and moves to the fence line.
  • Lock Down: The announcement will be made over the intercom.  Everyone proceeds through the kitchen to the loading dock area; a cafeteria staff member will lock the students in.
  • Tornado: The announcement will be made over the intercom.  Students proceed out both doors leading into the hallway staying away from the stairs; get down on hands and knees and cover heads.

MISCELLANEOUS
Any items left in the cafeteria after either lunch period should be taken to the lost and found table just outside the cafeteria

Volunteers are not to sit and/or eat, but are encouraged to get to know the students, staff and each other during lunch; however, our primary responsibility is to maintain safety and order during lunch, so make sure you are moving through the cafeteria during each .

Occasionally, you may be asked to work at the potato/soup bar.

No student is to use the microwave during lunch; it is there for the high school students and teachers only.

SCHEDULING AND SUBSTITUTIONS
If a volunteer is unable to make his or her assigned shift, he or she should find a substitute.  You will be given a list of volunteers with phone numbers and emails to contact for this purpose.  If you are unable to find a substitute, please let Page Hyler or the school receptionist know that you won’t be coming in as a teacher will then need to remain in the cafeteria for lunch that day.
