For Family Night, the Library will be open from 3:00 to 6:00 pm so that parents can come and shop with their students.  This would be a great time to find books to make this summer extra special.  Every half-hour there will be a drawing for a free door prize!

The 2012 Summer Reading Lists will be posted, and some of the selections at the Book Fair will be on them.  So be sure to look them over and stock up now!

In addition the RCS Key Club is sponsoring a bake sale on Monday at the Book Fair Family Night.  After you purchase your books and hoagies to support the library, be sure to pick up some dessert from the Key Club.  All bake sale proceeds will benefit Project Eliminate, the Kiwanian led mission to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus.

See you at the Book Fair!  Or should we say, “Aloha!”

ONE DAY EVENT

We are trying to hire a full time athletic trainer for our school next year.  Having all Roanoke Catholic sports participants get their physicals done at the school will help in getting the athletic trainer.  Over the course of a year we have over 200 athletes participate in sports. If each athlete pays $20 for physicals, we can use this money for an athletic trainer.  Four thousand dollars would help in achieving our goal.  The Roanoke Catholic booster club has been very generous in helping with the expense.

When parents take students to see a doctor due to sports injuries, this decreases instructional time and may result in lower grades.  Having a full time athletic trainer, at school will help solve these issues.  Please consider getting your physicals done at Roanoke Catholic.

Important information you need to know

·         August 1 is the dead line for physicals for Fall sports.

·         November 1 is the dead line for physicals for winter sports

·         February 25 is the dead line for physicals for spring sports

·         If the Athletic department does not have a physical on hand by this date do not come to practice until the physical is turned in.

·         Lets get this done now and do not wait.

What you need to do and bring with you

The cost for the physical is $20 per child.  Make the check out to Roanoke Catholic School.  Each physical must be completed and signed by a parent.  This needs to happen before your child hands the form to the Physician. If the form is not completed and signed then the athlete will not be seen.  The top left of the form must have a date of May 2011.  You can get the form at the following website

http://www.rcsceltics.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/2011-2012-physical.pdf

Concussion Baseline Testing

The cost for the concussion baseline test is $2.  The test will be held at Roanoke Catholic on May 17.  Please make the check out to Carillion Clinic. Montgomery County is making this test mandatory for all athletes participating in sports.  This IS NOT mandatory at Roanoke Catholic, but it is recommended for all athletes for the best treatable care for each Roanoke Catholic Student.   Following is a letter written by a Roanoke Catholic parent about the importance of baseline testing.

Dear Parents,

Very soon now Roanoke Catholic School will be offering sports physicals, and baseline concussion testing for your children who play sports.  I would like to share a brief story with you to explain the importance of having the baseline concussion test done on your child.

Recently my son was playing in a basketball game when he went up for a rebound.  When he came down he was on the ground holding his head.  Luckily that night we had the RCS trainer available to us.  The trainer’s instructions to us were to take him home, have him sit in a dark room and do nothing.  Cognitive activities of any kind were forbidden.  We followed up with our son’s physician.  The physician misdiagnosed the severity of the concussion because my sonappeared to be fine.  I wish we had had the baseline concussion test done prior to basketball season.   Doing so would’ve given the physician a base- line test with which he could compare my son’s current symptoms.  Recently, I have learned of more and more students from other schools who also have suffered concussions, and have missed a great deal of play time as well as academic time due to follow up doctor’s and therapist’s appointments.

Roanoke Catholic School will be offering VHSL sports physicals as well as baseline concussion testing at the school on May 17th.  I urge all parents to take advantage of this concussion testing for their children.  It only takes one elbow to the head to put your child in harm’s way!  All monies raised from this event will go towards hiring a full time trainer, one who can be available to our student athletes on a daily basis, not just one day a week!

Bookbag Santa

Bookbag Santa

It is that time of year again!  We have placed several collection boxes around the school for the Bookbag Santa program.  Teachers, please encourage the students to place their unwanted used school supplies in the boxes instead of the trash.

Roanoke Catholic School has participated in the Bookbag Santa Program for five years. Bookbag Santa not only takes supplies to 3 little schools in Belize, but they donate supplies to churches and other groups who have their own projects in Mexico, Haiti, Sudan, ElSalvador- and in U.S. ! Supplies have gone to local charities in Roanoke, Virginia, the Military Family Support Group, and Native American schools in South Dakota.
